New evidence has surfaced suggesting that Bobby Riggs threw his Battle of the Sexes match with Billie Jean King with the intention to settle gambling debts with the mob.
Riggs' loss within the match was always viewed with suspicion by some, as he'd easily defeated the #1 woman's tennis player Margaret Court only some months earlier before he lost in three straight sets to King.
It didn't help that Riggs was a notorious gambler who'd frequently bet huge sums on not only tennis matches but additionally rounds of golf in addition to being a large bettor on horse races and sports. 79 yer-old Hal Shaw has come forward and claims to has been a witness to a mob meeting discussing the fix. Riggs' nickname was the "Happy Hustler" and he was well-known for drumming up betting action in all types of ways, often losing a suite or two before upping the stakes and suddenly turning it on and winning.
His success at hustling people at tennis and golf unfortunately only gave him extra money to lose on horseracing and sportsbetting, with Riggs reportedly losing $30,000 overnight of betting on college football games.
Riggs died in 1995 on the age of 77 so there is no approach to know evidently if he really threw the match. King for one isn't buying the brand new "evidence", claiming “This story is solely ridiculous. I USED TO BE at the court with Bobby, and that i know he was not tanking the match."
